Tell Barclays to end its complicity in Israel's atrocities

New data has revealed that Barclays has backed away from underwriting Israeli government bonds, under pressure from our campaign. This is a big step forward, but it’s not enough. We must ramp up the pressure to demand that this is a permanent step, and that Barclays ends all of its complicity in Israel’s atrocities.

Barclays must make a public statement announcing its withdrawal as a primary dealer for Israel's sovereign bonds. In addition, Barclays must end its investments and provision of loans worth over £8billion to companies supplying Israel with weapons and military technology.

It is welcome that Barclays has backed away from underwriting new Israeli government bonds. However, this is not enough to end my boycott of the bank. Barclays must make this a permanent step by withdrawing as a primary dealer of Israel's sovereign bonds. In addition, Barclays must end its provision of investment and loans to companies supplying Israel with weapons and military technology used in its genocide in the Gaza Strip and military assaults in the West Bank.Israel uses bond issuances as a key way of funding its ongoing genocide in the Gaza Strip and imposition of illegal military occupation and apartheid across Palestine. Barclays must commit to permanently withdraw as a primary dealer of Israeli government bonds, including ending all involvement in Israel's bond auctions, and in the secondary market for Israel's bonds.Alongside this, Barclays must address its substantial provision of investment and loans to companies arming Israel. Research by Palestine Solidarity Campaign, War on Want and Campaign Against Arms Trade has found that Barclays provides over £2billion in investment, and over £6.1billion in loans and underwriting, to nine companies supplying Israel with the weapons and military technology it is using to carry out its attacks on Palestinians.UN experts have warned financial institutions investing in companies arming Israel that they risk “repercussions for complicity in potential atrocity crimes.” Despite this, Barclays continues to hold substantial financial ties to arms manufacturers supplying Israel.The mass boycott of Barclays will continue until the bank’s shameful complicity in Israel’s genocide and apartheid is ended. I look forward to receiving confirmation that Barclays has permanently withdrawn as a primary dealer of Israeli government bonds, and is taking steps to end its financial ties to arms companies supplying weapons and military technology to Israel.
