I am writing to raise my opposition to Britain’s continued arms trade with Israel, including the government’s continued facilitation of the British operations of Elbit Systems.
In line with Britain’s legal obligations not to aid and assist Israel’s genocide, illegal military occupation and apartheid, I am calling on the government to:
- Shut down the operations of Elbit Systems in Britain.
- Impose a comprehensive two-way arms embargo on Israel.
Elbit Systems is Israel’s largest arms manufacturer. It is deeply embedded in the Israeli military, producing a significant amount of the weaponry Israel uses to commit genocide and impose military occupation and apartheid against Palestinians. This includes bombs, armed drones, ammunition for Israel’s main battle tank and components for Israel’s fighter jets.
In Britain, Elbit Systems UK has been granted licenses by the government to export weapons components to Israel. These exports have continued even after the government’s decision to suspend a small number of arms export licenses for items that could be used in Israel’s genocide in Gaza in September 2025.
Elbit Systems’ sites in Britain also produce goods sold to the British military, including unmanned drones and radar systems. These contracts generate profits for the company as a whole, funding the production of more weaponry for the Israeli military.
In the recent announcement by the Foreign Secretary, the government rightly recognised that Israel’s military occupation is illegal and committed to act against companies that enable it. It follows from this that Elbit Systems, which is central to supplying Israel with weaponry used to maintain its unlawful occupation, should not be permitted to operate in Britain.
The government also announced that it will refuse export licenses for arms and other goods that “materially contribute to the occupation.” Yet, despite this commitment, it appears that no arms export licenses have been suspended following the announcement. In addition, the government continues to exempt exports for F-35 fighter jets from any restrictions, despite these jets being used extensively by Israel to bomb Palestinians in Gaza.
Palestinians have long called on governments around the world to impose comprehensive arms embargoes on Israel. Half measures are not enough. We must see a complete end to Britain’s complicity in Israel’s crimes. This includes imposing a comprehensive two-way arms embargo on Israel and shutting down Elbit Systems’ operations in Britain.
