Write to the Foreign Secretary: stop Israel's arbitrary detention of health workers

Palestinian health workers provide essential care to their people against incredible odds but Israel cruelly targets them with arbitrary detention, violence and even killing.

In June of this year, Israeli armed forces arrested Dr. Mazen al-Rantisi from his home in Ramallah and he remains in prison still. His lawyer has warned that his health is declining rapidly because of the deplorable conditions in prison, including torture and medical neglect at the hand of the Israeli prison guards. Dr. Rantisi’s story echoes that of Dr. Hussam Abu Safiyah, director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in the Gaza Strip who was imprisoned by Israel in December 2024 and has been held in inhumane conditions since then.

These doctors, and hundreds if not thousands more Palestinian health workers have been targeted by Israel precisely because of the wonderful work they do to support their people’s health and survival in the face of apartheid and genocide.

Dear Foreign Secretary,I’m writing to ask you to press the Israeli government to release imprisoned health workers Dr. Mazen Al-Rantisi, Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya and the tens of other health workers Israel holds in arbitrary detention.Dr. Mazen Al-Rantisi, a 71-year old Palestinian physician, was arrested in June by Israeli armed forces in a pre-dawn raid on his home in the illegally occupied West Bank. His lawyer has reported that his health is suffering due to the deplorable conditions of the prisons and the medical neglect which is routine in Israeli detention.Rantisi’s story echoes the case of Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, director of the Kamal Adwan Hospital in Gaza, who was detained by Israeli armed forces in December 2024. Abu Safiya’s lawyers warned in June of this year that his health was in grave danger after suffering months of torture and mistreatment at the hands of Israel’s prison guards.The UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory has raised <a href="https://www.ohchr.org/en/press-releases/2026/07/israel-must-release-dr-hussam-abu-safiya-and-all-palestinian-medical">grave concern</a> over Israel’s continued arbitrary detention of Palestinian medical personnel and the severe mistreatment they are subjected to, identified as “flagrant violations of international law, likely amounting to international crimes.” In its investigations, the Commission found that Israeli security forces deliberately killed, wounded, detained, and severely mistreated Palestinian medical personnel, constituting the war crimes of wilful killing and torture and the crime against humanity of extermination.Despite these consistent and relentless violations of international law, the British government continues diplomatic and trade relations with Israel, including a robust trade in arms which directly aids and assists Israel’s occupation and apartheid regime. It is entirely possible that weapons or components manufactured in Britain were used in the arrest raid on Dr. Rantisi’s home, not to mention the 2024 attack on Kamal Adwan Hospital. This is unacceptable.Please would you urgently raise the case of Dr. Rantisi, along with the cases of all Palestinian medical personnel arbitrarily detained by Israel, and press for their immediate release, along with all other Palestinians detained under Israel's illegal occupation.
