Write to the Foreign Secretary: Dr Abu Safiya and Israel's treatment of Palestinian prisoners

Please take urgent action for Dr Hussam Abu Safiya, whose life is in critical condition. He is the director of Kamal Adwan hospital in the Gaza Strip, and was abducted by the Israeli military over 18 months ago. Since then, he has been held as a prisoner without any charges. He has been tortured, denied treatment, and held in solitary confinement. His lawyers have just confirmed he needs urgent hospitalisation and that his life is in immediate danger.

<p class="MsoNormal">Dear Foreign Secretary,</p><div>I am writing to you about Israel’s horrific treatment of Dr Hussam Abu Safiya, whose life is in immediate danger.</div><div> </div><div>Dr Abu Safiya has been held without charge or trial by Israel for over 18 months. His lawyers confirm that he urgently requires hospital treatment after enduring prolonged solitary confinement, repeated beatings and the denial of essential medical care.</div><div> </div><div>Dr Abu Safiya is the director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza, and his case is not an isolated incident. He was abducted by the Israeli military as part of Israel's systematic targeting of Palestinian healthcare workers and the destruction of Gaza's healthcare system. Doctors, nurses and paramedics have been killed, detained, tortured and prevented from caring for their patients while hospitals have been repeatedly attacked in violation of international law.</div><div> </div><div><strong>The British government must take urgent action to hold Israel accountable for these crimes by implementing comprehensive sanctions now.</strong></div><div> </div><div>Since 2023 Israel has dramatically escalated its use of mass imprisonment. More than 9,000 Palestinians are currently imprisoned by Israel in the most horrific conditions imaginable and subjected to beatings, torture, rotten food and unsanitary environments. <a href="https://www.un.org/unispal/document/torture-and-genocide-report-francesca-albanese-a-hrc-61-71/">UN experts</a> have concluded that Israel is systematically and purposefully using torture against Palestinians.</div><div> </div><div>I have seen that Minister of State Hamish Falconer MP has raised the case of Dr Abu Safiya with the Israeli authorities, but this is not nearly enough. If Britain is really committed to the rule of law, then meaningful action is needed to stop Israel’s grave violations.</div><div> </div><div><strong>You must use your ministerial position to:</strong></div><ul><li>Demand the release of all unjustly detained Palestinian prisoners, including Dr Hussam Abu Safiya.</li><li>Implement comprehensive sanctions, including a full two-way arms embargo on Israel, until it complies with its obligations under international law.</li></ul>
