Tell the BBC: Don’t platform genocidal Israel in Eurovision

Allowing Israel to perform every year as part of the Eurovision Song Contest normalises Israel’s genocide and apartheid, and gives a green light to its complete disregard for international law.

<div> </div><div>I am writing to you to ask that the BBC follows the examples of the Dutch, Spanish, Irish, Icelandic and Slovenian broadcasters, and commits to withdrawing from the Eurovision Song Contest if Israel is allowed to participate.</div><div> </div><div>For the last two years, Israel has committed what has been widely recognised as a genocide on Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. A new UN-published report, “Gaza Genocide: a collective crime”, cites Israel’s participation in Eurovision as a prominent example of how “Israel has been sheltered from accountability”. Since the ceasefire announcement, Israel has repeatedly violated the agreement, continuing to ignore international law and target Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank. In just one night on October 28th over 100 Palestinians, including at least 50 children, were killed in Israeli attacks.</div><div> </div><div>Thousands of film workers, musicians, and other cultural figures have reasserted their commitment to refuse to ‘art-wash’ Israeli apartheid and genocide against Palestinians. The world’s largest documentary festival, IDFA, has recently endorsed the cultural boycott of Israel and its complicit institutions, among hundreds of other European arts institutions and organisations. The BBC cannot claim to be an impartial broadcaster whilst it actively participates in the normalisation of Israel’s genocide and apartheid.</div><div> </div><div>The Israeli broadcaster, KAN, has consistently justified and incited genocide live on air, and its performance in Eurovision has been boosted by the Israeli government. It has broken many of the European Broadcasting Union rules, and yet somehow has been allowed to continue to participate. In contrast, the European Broadcasting Union banned Russia from Eurovision almost immediately after its illegal invasion of Ukraine. By allowing Israel to continue to participate, the EBU has utterly tarnished the reputation of Eurovision, and thousands of fans have participated in sustained boycotts since 2017.</div><div> </div><div>Palestinians have called for broadcasters to immediately commit to withdrawing from the Eurovision Song Contest if genocidal Israel is allowed to participate. I write to you to demand that the BBC follows the good example of five fellow European broadcasters and <strong>publicly commits to withdrawing from the Eurovision Song Contest whilst Israel is allowed to participate. </strong></div><div> </div><div>I would appreciate a reply to the concerns I have raised in this email.</div>
