Andy Burnham has had to admit that Labour "didn't get it right" on Palestine and has said the party must "do better" in response to Israel's genocide, illegal occupation and apartheid. Without meaningful action, an apology is totally inadequate.

This means sanctions. </strong></div><div> </div><div>You were correct in stating that Labour “didn’t get it right” and needs to “do better” on Palestine. We must now see meaningful action. Last month the <a href="https://www.ohchr.org/en/press-releases/2026/06/israel-continues-commit-genocide-and-other-atrocity-crimes-deliberately">UN Commission of Inquiry</a> confirmed that Israel is still committing genocide against the Palestinian people. This mirrors the findings of an overwhelming array of human rights organisations and genocide scholars.</div><div> </div><div>Your assertion that it is up to the international courts to decide is no excuse for inaction. The Genocide Convention is clear that all states – including Britain – must take every available step to prevent genocide as soon as they are aware of a serious risk of it. Despite this, the government continues to allow the supply of F-35 fighter jet parts and other arms to Israel. This must end.</div><div> </div><div>Shamefully, it is now two years since the July 2024 International Court of Justice judgement that Israel’s presence in the occupied Palestinian territory is unlawful and that Israel is guilty of the crime of apartheid. The same ICJ ruling set out clear legal obligations for Britain to cease all actions that aid or assist these grave violations of international law. It is disgraceful that the British government has still not even issued a response.</div><div> </div><div>As you take office as Prime Minister, you must seize the opportunity to finally end Labour’s shameful complicity in Israel’s crimes against Palestinians and implement policies that uphold international law.</div><div> </div><div>This means:</div><ul><li>Recognising the findings of the UN Commission of Inquiry that Israel is committing genocide and commit to implementing the July 2024 ICJ ruling in full.</li><li>Taking all reasonable steps to prevent or mitigate the risk of genocide in Gaza, starting by imposing comprehensive sanctions on Israel, including a full arms embargo.</li><li>Banning all trade in goods and services with Israel’s illegal settlements, and all other trade that aids or assists Israel’s violations of international law.</li><li>Reversing the authoritarian use of public order and anti-terror legislation to suppress protest in support of Palestinian rights.</li></ul><div><div class="OutlineElement Ltr SCXW163198150 BCX8"> </div></div>
