Support Dr. Ghassan Abu-Sittah: Write to the General Medical Council today

You may have heard about the heroic work of Dr. Ghassan Abu-Sittah, a British-Palestinian reconstructive surgeon who has for decades been treating patients in Palestine, Lebanon and beyond, including children who have been horribly injured in Israel’s attacks.

He is being targeted by anti-Palestinian groups, and now Britain’s medical regulator, the General Medical Council (GMC), is trying to stop him practicing. This is an outrageous attempt to try and silence Palestinians like Dr. Abu-Sittah, and to prevent them from advocating for their own people’s safety, and for the wider principles of justice. It will not work.

Already thousands of doctors have called on the GMC leadership to resign over this spurious attack, but we need to increase the pressure.

<div class="OutlineElement Ltr SCXW141711177 BCX8">Dear Members of the General Medical Council, </div><div class="OutlineElement Ltr SCXW141711177 BCX8">I am writing as a member of the public to express deep concern regarding the current direction of the General Medical Council (GMC) and the impact it is having on my trust in the profession and the wider health system. </div><div class="OutlineElement Ltr SCXW141711177 BCX8">In the NHS’ constitution, it states that the “NHS is founded on a common set of principles and values that bind together the communities and people it serves – patients and public – and the staff who work for it”, to which I believe the integrity of medical regulation is fundamental. </div><div class="OutlineElement Ltr SCXW141711177 BCX8">I am particularly concerned by the GMC’s decision to challenge in the High Court the recent outcome of the Medical Practitioners Tribunal which cleared Dr. Ghassan Abu-Sittah of all allegations against him after he spoke out against Israel’s genocide against the Palestinian people in Gaza. Dr. Abu-Sittah is a British-Palestinian reconstructive surgeon who has spent more than three decades treating civilians injured in war. I understand the complaint against him was brought by a pro-Israel advocacy group, UK Lawyers for Israel (UKLFI).  </div><div class="OutlineElement Ltr SCXW141711177 BCX8">UKLFI is a disgraced organisation which runs campaigns steeped in anti-Palestinian racism. Earlier this year it faced widespread criticism when its CEO made the grotesque suggestion that by imposing famine on Gaza, Israel’s use of starvation as a weapon could help to reduce obesity.  </div><div class="OutlineElement Ltr SCXW141711177 BCX8">I am extremely concerned that the GMC is succumbing to pressure from such an organisation and continuing its discriminatory targeting of Dr. Abu-Sittah, when all evidence against him has already been heard and fully cleared in a full public hearing where an objective legal test was applied. Thousands of doctors and healthcare workers have written to the GMC to express their concerns about the environment of fear these actions by the GMC against Dr. Abu-Sittah have created, which serve to undermine the delivery of care to patients.  </div><div class="OutlineElement Ltr SCXW141711177 BCX8">In light of this, as a concerned member of the public with a right to healthcare and to receive fair and equitable treatment, I am calling for the resignation of the Chief Executive and Chair as a necessary step to restore credibility, to rebuild my trust, and to safeguard the integrity of medical regulation in Britain. </div>
