Ban Israel from UEFA and FIFA

This could be huge. It is being reported that UEFA is actively considering banning Israel. But it won’t happen unless we continue to ramp up the pressure.

Take action by writing to Britain’s Football Associations to demand they take urgent steps to push for Israel to be banned from UEFA and FIFA, including by calling for the UEFA Executive Committee to be convened to vote on banning Israel. If UEFA and FIFA do not ban Israel, Britain’s Football Associations should refuse to allow clubs to participate in matches with Israeli teams.

I am writing to demand that Britain’s Football Associations take steps, including through a public call, to push for Israel to be banned from UEFA and FIFA. This includes calling for the UEFA Executive Committee to be urgently convened to vote on banning Israel.Israel’s genocide against Palestinians in Gaza has killed many tens, if not hundreds of thousands of Palestinians, including many hundreds of Palestinian footballers and sportspeople. It has annihilated Gaza’s footballing infrastructure such as stadiums, training facilities and pitches.Allowing Israel to remain in international sporting bodies like FIFA and UEFA sanitises this horrific violence and allows Israel to present itself as a normal country, obscuring the truth that it is carrying out a genocide and imposing a regime of military occupation and apartheid against Palestinians.The Israel Football Association (IFA) directly participates in Israel’s crimes. It includes football clubs based in illegal Israeli settlements on stolen Palestinian land in the occupied West Bank. These clubs are part of the infrastructure of Israel’s military occupation of Palestinian land, ruled illegal by the International Court of Justice.Furthermore, the IFA’s member clubs have sent “care packages” to Israeli soldiers committing genocide in Gaza and organised videos of club employees serving as Israeli soldiers in Gaza as motivation ahead of matches. In addition, their fan groups have a long history of racist violence and incitement against Palestinians.FIFA and UEFA’s own statutes prevent member associations from playing on the territory of another association without their approval, and require associations to implement polices to eradicate racism. The Israel Football Association is in clear violation of these rules by participating in Israel’s racist oppression of the Palestinian people.Both UEFA and FIFA acted quickly to suspend Russia’s national and club teams after its invasion of Ukraine. But in contrast, after nearly two years of Israel’s horrific assault on Palestinians in Gaza, which has been recognised as a genocide by a vast array of legal experts and human rights groups, football’s governing bodies refuse to take similar measures to ban Israel.Calls to ban Israel are mounting. Earlier this week, 7 UN experts issued a statement calling for Israel to be expelled from international football. They appealed to sporting bodies to “not turn a blind eye to grave human rights violations, especially when their platforms are used to normalise injustices.”The UN experts letter reminds football’s governing institutions that the legal obligation to take action to prevent and stop genocide apply to all international bodies. In this context, you must use your considerable influence to ensure that Israel is banned from UEFA and FIFA. This includes calling for the UEFA Executive Committee to be urgently convened to vote on banning Israel. If UEFA and FIFA do not ban Israel, you must refuse to allow clubs to participate in matches with Israel’s national or club teams.
