Email the Secretary of State for Justice about hunger striking imprisoned activists

A group of imprisoned activists associated with Palestine Action are on hunger strike in protest over the repressive and inhumane conditions of their detention. Their health has been deteriorating rapidly and several are now at grave risk of death.

Despite the public outcry over this crisis, along with calls from MPs, Peers and human rights advocates for intervention, the government has refused to meet with the families or legal representatives of the prisoners.

Write to the Secretary of State for Justice, David Lammy MP, and demand he take urgent action to uphold the human rights of these prisoners and meet their demands for a fair trial and reasonable bail conditions.

You must urgently meet with their families and legal representatives to resolve this crisis. Their health is deteriorating quickly and there is a real risk that they may die on account of your failure to take action to uphold their human rights.</div><div class="OutlineElement Ltr SCXW231143017 BCX0"> </div><div class="OutlineElement Ltr SCXW231143017 BCX0">As you know, several of these prisoners are being held on remand, some of them for up to two years, without having been convicted of any crime; their communications with family and friends have been censored; and their right to a fair trial is being restricted, with some of the documents relevant to their defence withheld from their or their lawyers’ view. These conditions are completely unacceptable, and a violation of the prisoners’ basic human rights, which should be guaranteed in a democracy.</div><div class="OutlineElement Ltr SCXW231143017 BCX0"> </div><div class="OutlineElement Ltr SCXW231143017 BCX0">These prisoners are facing trial for allegedly taking action to prevent arms manufacturers from shipping weapons to Israel, which has been conducting a genocide against the Palestinian people, on top of its ongoing illegal occupation and apartheid. Over 70,000 Palestinians have been killed in Israel’s genocide, including over 20,000 children. Instead of working to end this genocide, the government has cracked down on those protesting against it and is now denying the rights of those who are imprisoned awaiting trial for what is hard to regard as anything other than political reasons.</div><div class="OutlineElement Ltr SCXW231143017 BCX0"> </div><div class="OutlineElement Ltr SCXW231143017 BCX0">The right to a fair trial, including reasonable bail conditions, is an absolute right that must be protected in a democratic society. MPs and Peers, notable human rights advocates and many others have spoken up in collective outrage to call urgent attention to these young people who are at the brink of death. The decision in your hands is one of life and death. I demand that you uphold the principles of respect for fundamental rights that should be integral to the office you hold.</div></div>
